Review: In Good Company

Trailers can be a blessing or a hinderance, i have had some experiences on both ends in the last year. A good one was the pre teaser for Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, there was no way in the world i was expecting george Lucus to use stuff from the Star Wars movies from the 80's. It just blew my mind. On the other end of the experience was the trailer for the remake of the TV Starsky & Hutch. This trailer had every single funny bit in the movie in it, it made the movie not all it could have been. In Good Company wasn't on either on these extremes, it did something else to me. I think my biggest crush in the world at the moment is on Scarlett Johansson. After seeing the movie i found out the trailer lulled me into a false sence on how good this movie might have been.

In Good Company is supposed to be a comedy and it does have a few good laughs. The jokes however seem like they are either really lame slapstick or jokes that just make mention of parts earlier in the film. Now there is nothing wrong with this kind of humor but i do find it a little annoying when it is the only jokes that they make. The slapstick in this film isn't so bad but i don't think that this was the right way to go for Topher Grace if he wants to break away from his TV character. I found it quite difficult to not think of Topher gace as the guy from That 70's Show, although his character in the movie was very differnet there always seemed to be moments where he slipped back into his old ways (now that he has left the show and is all about amking it as a real actor).

The rest of cast was really just very plain and i didn't really feel for any of them or there problems. Dennis Quaid just seem to have the same emotion all the way through, he didn't ever really seem hurt by any of the things that were going on in his life. The other main player in the film was the very very beautiful Scarlett Johansson. Now like i mentioned before i have a slight crush on this girl but this wasn't one of her best preformances. Her character in this movie was very much like Natlie Portmans character in Garden State, unlike Natlie Portman though Scarlett seemed to have no emotion what so ever. The cast was just too black and white.

In Good Company just fell short on most parts that make a movie interesting. The cast just faded into the background and the script seemed flat and a little boring. The material might just not be great enough for a good movie but i have enjoyed the directors work before (like American Pie and About a Boy) but this was just a little sub standard. Fingers crossed for the next one i haven't lost faith just yet!

Review- Sahara

Sahara would have been movie that would have just passed me by if i hadn't read some review that spoke up for how good it might be. The reason that i didn't really want anything to do with this movie was that the trailer was just really so bad, it just did a lot of things that made me very angry. The trailer hurt me a lot, what the main problem was was it just showed a lot of difference action scene, quickly flashing them on screen just to create a feeling of action. With that problem it made me angry that i couldn't get a long enough look at one of the other actors in the movie to see if it was the person i was thinking of. With the bad trailer and not much background i don't think i could have cared less if this passed me by.

Luckily however some good reviews i read changed my mind about this movie so that i thought it was a good idea to go see this movie. For the last few years action movies have been changing and evloving, movies like Men in Black and National Tresure have made action stars less like Arnie. I still want to see things blow up and all but my view of an action hero has changed. Matthew McConaughey i think has found a place in action movies for sometime to come. He has been in some romance movies but none of his proformances have ever stuck in my mind, actully i couldn't remember if i had to try. The only other movie i liked him in was A Time to Kill, whiched suited hm to a tea because of his southern accent. Now i can reforget the other performance and just focus on hopefully more great action roles.

I was expecting a fair action movie with a lot of witty lines cause Steve Zahn is always good value. When i got to the end of the movie i was very pleased to have gotten a great popcorn movie plus Steve Zahn was more then i could have hoped. Everything went right in the actions scenes, they were fasted paced and were very in tune with the crazy story. My only problem with the whole movie was when Penelope Cruz. Now don't get me wrong she is a very cute girl, which is backed up in this movie. There are long slow shots with her in a wet shirt and a bikini, they were very very good. My problem however is that she always opens her mouths and words come out, I just can't stand her voice it makes my skin crawl.

Sahara never tries to be more then anything more then a really fun movie, it does it by going all out for 2 hours. It is really non stop the whole time. Most of the performances are great and never faulter during the whole film. Sahara wwent from being a movie that make me hate it cause of it's stupid trailer to a movie that is on my buy DVD list. I can't wait to see this DVD and i have all my fingers crossed that they do a good job!

Rant- Sin City Delayed

Oh my god, what the fucking kind of backwater hicks-ville do i live in?? Yesterday i found out that one of the movies i wanted to see most this year will be delayed even more then it was. Sin City came out int the US at the start of April and what what i have seen of the charts it is still doing really well now. It was second on the chart last week only behind Sahara and i think that is prtty good considering, it wasn't its opening week and it has an R rating. With all this success you would think that it would come out here in Australia quite soon and the plan was that it was coming out a week after Star Wars. Now this deal was hard enough to swallow but i had come to terms with it.

Yesterday i read that now that Sin City won't be here till August. Now that news really really pisses me off. Having to wait 5 months is just going to kill me. I am thinking now i will have the DVD from the US before it comes out here. Now this isn't bragging it is just a reality, but this makes me more angry because everyone says that this movie is great on the big screen, but having the DVD available is just too tempting so i guess i will see it on the small screen.

Review- The Amityville Horror

For the longest time i can say that i have never really bothered with horror movies. They just seemed pointless but i guess i just saying that cause i guess i was scared. Although in the last few months i have kinda craved a good scare which i thought i might get from a few movie. Those few movies haven't really done it for me but i was hopeing the The Amityville Horror would change that.

The Amityville Horror was a great pocorn movie that lived up to everything i had expected. So of the remakes of horror movies i have seen (like The Grudge and Texas Chainsaw Massacre) have not lived up to the reputation of there origanals at all. Now i haven't seen the original The Amityville Horror but i would guess that this movie easily live up to the original. The Amityville Horror had a lot of good moments that put me on the edge of my seat thoughout the whole movie. I didn't really think about it during the movie but after my brother mentioned that he thought that the scary people are starting to look all the same and i tend to agree after a little bit of thought. Now the movie that can come up with something origianl will be a big hit i am guessing, you know it's coming with people like Robert Rodriguez and Kerry Conran doing such great work with digital movies.

The scare i was hopeing for never really came and that really pissed me off. The only thing these movies of late have been offering is a little freakyness which i can get from a lot of other places. What i want from a scary movie is to be freaked out when i leave like my friend Wade who had his fingers in his ears during half the movie. Now where the hell is my movie where i have to put my fingers in my ear????

The Amityville Horror had a lot of the things i wanted from a movie. Actully it had my number one favouite thing, it had one really freaky moment! I won't say because that is just no fun but what i will say is that just pay close attention to the part with the babysitter. The other things going for this movie was the performance of Ryan Reynolds. I will say this now, i think that Ryan Reynolds will have a long career. He managed to save the thrid Blade movie ( i think that he might be the reason there will be a fourth) and i can't wait for him to be in a good comedy cause i think i will be on the floor trying to keep my sides from splitting( i hope).
